Enabling Lean Six Sigma Manufacturing

CIMx

Companies are adopting the Lean and Six Sigma complementary methodologies to reduce shop floor errors, improve quality and increase manufacturing throughput.

Every product being manufactured is the sum of its characteristics represented by the design, the bill-of-material, the manufacturing steps, the processes used, the quality data collected on that product and the assembly operations.  This information is the “as-built” record and is a key component of a Lean Six Sigma Manufacturing (LSSM) environment.  Digital closed-loop communication and use of the as-built record within assembly operations produced the following benefits:

  • An acceleration of product time-to-market
  • True engineering intent represented in assembly operations
  • An improved ability to build-to-order
  • Reduction of engineering change processing time
  • Reduction in quality escapes and variation
  • Elimination of paper errors and mishandling
  • All information needed when required
  • Daily reports on actual as-built quality available for management

Support for LSSM is now economically achievable with current off-the-shelf technology and the principles have been proven in several companies.  With appropriate focus on people, process and technology a true Lean Six Sigma environment is becoming more achievable and companies can dramatically improve manufacturing operations.
