Standardized Work Instructions

Problem: A large aerospace company had multiple work instruction planning systems based on obsolete hardware and software that was increasingly difficult to support and could not efficiently manage process or product changes. It was imperative the company find a solution that people would readily adopt, that would enable standardization of work instructions across the enterprise and that was flexible enough to accommodate the unique differences in each plant.

Solution: The company replaced their system with Interax, a configurable Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) system. It was deployed in several plants and was rapidly accepted by the shop floor staff. It also was configurable to reflect unique processes in each plant with the exact same software solution.

Result: The company has already saved over $30 million as a result of higher productivity, higher quality and reduced shop floor cost over the last 10 years.

Benefits:

  • Reduced scrap by over 20%
  • Reduced manufacturing engineering time by more than 30%
  • Reduced walk-around non-productive time by over 25%
  • Reduced cost of errors and omissions
  • Reduced product rework
