You have production problems.

Production errors

Defects are costly when you catch them during production.  They can be fatal if you ship them.

Production visibility

If you can't see work real-time from anywhere, you're operating in a black hole.

Production efficiency

Operators are not easily replaced.  Make sure you're making the most of yours.

We know that no two manufacturers are alike.  Even within very specific industry segments, the differences between how you do things varies greatly.  Some of you track inventory to the last item; others have bulk items that you source in large quantities and don't track except to know when to reorder.  Some have teams that change roles frequently for cross-training and others where operators have done the same work for a decade.

Whatever industry you are in, we do find some common problems that we talk about regularly, usually centered around the materials, people and processes you use daily.  We've built Quantum and our implementation process to help you maximize the savings in these areas.

Production costs

No matter how profitable a manufacturer is, reducing bottom-line cost is at the top of the list for reasons to buy a system.

Here's a few tips to help you get the product that you need to solve the issues that you have around costs:

  • Identify key holes in your procurement process. Are you overstocking inventory?  Do you pay for overnight shipping on understocked items?  Align the purchase of a software product around real savings that you might see.
  • Compare your estimated cost (both time and money) for the work your team needs to do with the actual expense of the work completed.  Find a system that show you this real-time.
  • Align your work schedules, your people and the work you have to do today to maximum advantage.  Ensure that your work centers have optimal capacity and flex work throughout the day as activities complete on the shop floor.  Identify a tool that actively connects jobs and the schedule on more than a simple list.

It's not easy to find and solve the cause of defects in manufacturing.  Often, teams are just looking to "hammer to fit".   Here's a few ways to solve quality issues with software:

  • Note the date, time, operator, work area and product being made during issues.  Track these to see trends in your shop.  Find a tool that can do this for you automatically.
  • Give your team quick fixes for common issues that they run into.  These are pre-approved ways for them to fix issues proactively.  Get a system that easily makes these available.
  • Keep track of your escapes.  While you never want to see these, you need to make sure you can resolve them quickly when and if they happen.  Look for a software that enables you to note this information on prior work so you don't lose the information.

Defects are very costly when you catch them during production.  Release them to your customer and they're deadly.

Production visibility

If you can't see work real-time from anywhere, you're operating in a black hole.

Getting "eyes and ears" on the production shop floor is no easy feat.  You can't be everywhere at once.  Here's how to find an aid to do that:

  • Move past operators "clocking on and off" jobs.  This isn't helpful to you and doesn't provide real-time information.  Get a system that serves them and you all the information you need, on-demand.
  • When you need to move something around, it's frustrating not to be able to see the possible outcomes.  Don't settle.  Find a tool that allows you to pivot work, people and materials as you need to, real-time.
  • Communication to and from the shop floor can be a challenge and you don't want your team wandering around.  Make sure your digital tools support communication in both directions for a tight shop.

If we could buy efficiency off the shelf, we would.  It's a high-level, complex thing that only the highest-performing teams achieve.  Here's how to get their with yours:

  • Know your workforce.  Not all operators will be equal in skills in all areas.  Measure what they're good at and let them excel for you.  Identify a system that can easily compare one to another.
  • Show them exactly what you need them to do.  Use videos and other modern means to give them the instructions, warnings and requirements you have for every job.
  • Let them communicate with you.  Take feedback from your operators seriously.  Listen and respond. And find a system that tracks that all for you so you can do it with ease.
